Clinical information
Lymphogranuloma Venereum (LGV) is caused by the serotypes L1, L2, and L3 of Chlamydia trachomatis and is sexually transmitted. It is more common in men who have sex with men (MSM). LGV is rare in the general population.
LGV is often asymptomatic (especially in women; cervicitis in 85% without symptoms). If symptoms occur, the primary stage is a non-painful, often itchy ulcer at the entry site (more common in the anal region in MSM). As the disease progresses, there is swelling of the (inguinal) lymph nodes with pain and fever as well as bleeding and purulent discharge. In the context of proctitis, very severe pain can occur during defecation.
Note: A screening test for Chlamydia trachomatis is conducted first. If the result is positive, the differentiation pcr is performded.
