Clinical information
Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a viral infection that affects the central nervous system, particularly the brain and spinal cord. It is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected ticks, primarily in certain regions of Europe and Asia.
The symptoms of TBE can vary from mild flu-like symptoms to more severe cases involving inflammation of the brain and spinal cord. Common symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, and nausea. In severe cases, individuals may experience neurological symptoms such as meningitis, encephalitis, paralysis, and even death.
The Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) recommends vaccination against TBE for all adults and children in general from the age of six who live or temporarily stay in endemic areas.
