Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) is a protein that plays a crucial role in the metabolism of lipids, particularly cholesterol. It is synthesized primarily in the liver, but it is also produced by other cells, including macrophages and neurons.
ApoE is involved in the transport and redistribution of lipids throughout the body. It interacts with lipoproteins such as LDL and HDL, which transport cholesterol and other fats in the bloodstream, and helps in their uptake and excretion by binding to specific receptors on the surface of cells.

There are three major isoforms of ApoE: ApoE2, ApoE3, and ApoE4.
These isoforms differ in their amino acid sequence due to genetic variations.

• ApoE3 is the most common isoform and is considered the neutral or normal variant.
• ApoE2 is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease.
• ApoE4 is linked to an increased risk of developing certain conditions, including Alzheimer's disease and cardiovascular disease.
