Clinical information
Trichomonas vaginalis is a parasitic protozoa that can infect the urogenital tract in both males and females and can cause a sexually transmitted infection called trichomoniasis.
Trichomoniasis is usually transmitted through sexual contact and can lead to symptoms such as vaginal discharge, itching, burning sensation, and discomfort during urination or sexual intercourse.
Complications can arise if also the inner sexual organs like ovaries and fallopian tubes in women or prostate and testicles in men get inflamed. In women, this can lead to tissue adhesions and ectopic growths which increase the risk of ectopic pregnancies and infertility.
Note: Urine samples from women have a lower sensitivity compared to a cervical or vaginal swab.
