The bacterium Chlamydophila psittaci causes chlamydiosis in bird species (including parrots, parakeets, pigeons and turkeys), which can be transmitted to humans through contact with the faeces or other excretions of infected animals (zoonosis).

In humans, infection with C. psittaci leads to the so-called "parrot disease" (ornithosis or psittacosis), which can be accompanied by mild flu-like symptoms, but can also lead to atypical interstitial pneumonia.
