Tramadol is an active analgesic of the weak functioning opioids. Tramadol is administered for medium-strong to strong prolonged pain, when non-opioid analgesics are insufficient. Tramadol functions on the basis of a dual mechanism: i.e. it bonds with opioid receptors on the one hand, and on the other inhibits the reuptake of the neurotransmitters noradrenalin and serotonin. The combination of an opioid together with a reuptake inhibitor thus introduces two aspects of the active ingredient for the alleviation of pain. But, frequently undesirable side effects are experienced, primarily nausea, but also headaches, undue sweating and somnolence. When however tramadol is misused as an intoxicant, as with other opioids, there is s risk of addiction an the and thist misuse can trigger withdrawal symptoms.
