Metal mobilisation test before and after DMPS

Clinical information

Principle: Using the complexing agent DMPS (2,3-dimercapto-propan-1-sulfonate), heavy metals (Hg, Pb, Cu, Ni, Sn) accumulated in the organism can be mobilised and detected in the urine.
Procedure:
Bladder emptying in plastic vessel: Determination of the metals.
After bladder emptying, administration of 10 mg DMPS/kg bw with ½ - 1 litre water (resp. 3 - 4 mg/kg i.v.).
After 2 hours, bladder emptying and second determination of the metals (in case of i.v. Administration: bladder emptying after 45 minutes).
The time should be marked on the tubes.
Interpretation: Patients with amalgam fillings show an increase to 2 - 5 times the initial value.
