Thyreoglobulin and thyroglobulin ab
Material & Volume
Serum, 1ml
Clinical information
Thyroglobulin is a glycoprotein. It is formed in the endoplasmic reticulum of thyrocytes, stored in the follicular lumen and forms the storage form of thyroid hormones. Normally, only a small amount is detectable in the blood. Elevated levels indicate damage to the follicular cells. The main field of application is the control of thyroid carcinoma patients (follicular and papillary carcinoma) after removal of the thyroid gland. After total removal of the thyroid gland by surgery and iodine therapy, persistent or reappearing TG levels are indicative of local recurrence or distant metastases.
Elevated:
Malignant diseases: follicular and papillary thyroid carcinoma, recurrences after surgery.
Benign diseases: Graves' disease, struma nodosa, euthyroid goiter, autonomous adenoma, thyroiditis de Quervain (high levels).
Indications: In 10% of patients with thyroid carcinoma, autoantibodies against thyroglobulin (TAK) are formed, so that falsely low values can occur. Therefore, TAK is automatically determined with every TG request.
